Experience the romance of steam rail travel on a half day trip from Maitland to Dungog and return riding the Dungog Picnic Train.

Your journey begins at Maitland Railway Station and travels along the scenic North Coast line to Dungog.

The town centre in Dungog is a short walk from the railway station and you will have ample time to check out this delightful country town before the return trip to Maitland.

Enjoy the benefit of an entire closed-off compartment to yourselves in a heritage side-corridor carriage — great for larger families and social groups!

One booking is good for up to a maximum of eight (8) people including children

Family of Four — $220 per family

Four seat booth in a heritage railway carriage with table and window seats guaranteed 


Classic Duo — $150 for two people

Window seating for two people in a classic heritage carriage in a spacious booth with table.

Enjoy your own space in a Private Compartment

Buffet Car:

The Buffet Car will not be available for these trips. We also encourage passengers to bring their own picnic hampers, sit back and enjoy the ride.


BYO alcohol is allowed, however, large eskys will not be permitted



Toilets are available in most carriages.


Mobile Phones:

There are no charging points on the heritage equipment. It is recommended that you bring an external battery charger for your mobile devices.

Motive Power:

R766 will be the motive power for the Dungog Picnic Trains

COVID-19 Condition of Travel:

  • Passengers are asked to wear a face masks when boarding and alighting from the train

  • We recommend wearing face masks while seated and not eating or drinking

  • Passengers are asked to remain in their allocated seats as far as pracical

  • Passengers are required to follow all instructions from their carriage attendant

  • Other conditions may be implemented on the day depending on current COVID-19 restrictions

  • If the train is cancelled due to NSW Health restrictions, a full refund of the ticket price will be provided
