Returning in Spring 2022!​ 

Travel on our signature steam train tour from Sydney to Kiama and return.


Your journey starts from a choice of railway stations in the Sydney Metropolitan area and traverses the beautiful South Coast line, heading through the Royal National Park along the way and on to the seaside town of Kiama.


Hauling the Kiama Picnic Train™ will be locomotive 5917, built by Baldwin (USA) in the 1950s for the NSW Government Railways.


After arrival at Kiama, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the many charms of this picturesque coastal town. Take a walk up to the famous Kiama Blowhole, relax at the Surf Beach or browse the Historic Terrace Houses.


If lunching in Kiama, please book beforehand to avoid disappointment.


Please Note: All fares are for same-day return travel.


Private Compartment — $500 per group

Enjoy the benefit of an entire compartment to yourselves — great for families and social groups! One booking is good for up to a maximum of six (6) adults, or a maximum of eight (8) including children. 


Classic Duo — $240 for two people

Window seating for two people in a spacious booth with table within a classic heritage carriage.

The Kiama Picnic Train picks up and drops off at the following destinations

Outboard Journey — Pickup Only

  • Tempe — dep 9.40am 

  • Hurstville — dep 10.00am 

  • Sutherland — dep 10.15am

  • Wollongong — dep 11.30am

  • Kiama — arr 12.30pm

Return Journey — Setdown Only

  • Kiama — dep 4.15pm

  • Wollongong — arr 5.10pm

  • Sutherland — arr 7.00pm

  • Hurstville — arr 7.15pm

  • Tempe — arr 7.30pm

Enjoy your own space in a Private Compartment

Buffet Car:

The Buffet car will not be available at this stage. We encourage passengers to bring their own picnic hampers.


BYO alcohol is allowed, however, large eskys will not be permitted



Toilets are available in all carriages and will be locked off while in metropolitan areas.


Mobile Phones:

There are no charging points on the heritage equipment. It is recommended that you bring an external battery charger for your mobile devices.

Condition of Travel:

  • Passengers are asked to wear a face masks when boarding and alighting from the train

  • We recommend wearing face masks while seated and not eating or drinking

  • Passengers are asked to remain in their allocated seats as far as pracical

  • Passengers are required to follow all instructions from their carriage attendant

  • Other conditions may be implemented on the day depending on current COVID-19 restrictions
